Ο
Δρ Άρης Ν. Πουλιανός γεννήθηκε στον Εύδηλο Ικαρίας στις 23 Ιουλίου 1924.
Πολέμησε το 1942-3 ενάντια στους ξένους εισβολείς μέσα από τις τάξεις
του Ε.Λ.Α.Σ. και το 1948-9 του Δ.Σ.Ε. Σπούδασε Βιολογία στις Η.Π.Α.
(Queen's College, Ν.Υ.) και
Ανθρωπολογία στη Σοβιετική Ένωση, όπου υπερασπίστηκε το 1961 τη διδακτορική
του διατριβή (PhD) με θέμα: "H Προέλευση των Ελλήνων". Το
1956 απέκτησε τον γιο του Νίκο, ο οποίος έγινε και αυτός Δρ Ανθρωπολογίας.
Έως το 1965 εργάστηκε στο τμήμα Ανθρωπολογίας της Σοβιετικής Ακαδημίας,
διδάσκοντας παράλληλα ως καθηγητής Ανθρωπολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο της
Μόσχας. Κατά τα πρώτα αυτά έτη της 10ετίας του '60 διατέλεσε επίσης
διευθυντής αρχαιολογικών και κυρίως ανθρωπολογικών ερευνητικών αποστολών
στη Ρωσία,
Βουλγαρία, Ρουμανία, Γιουγκοσλαβία, Γεωργία-Καύκασο, Καζακστάν,
Τουρκμενιστάν και Ουζμπεκιστάν. Από το 1965 που επαναπατρίστηκε συνεχίζει
με νεότερες ανθρωπολογικές μελέτες τόσο στην Ελλάδα (Κρήτη, Αιγαίο,
Ιόνιο, Πίνδο, Θράκη, Μακεδονία), όσο και στο εξωτερικό (Αϊνού Ιαπωνίας,
Βάσκους Ισπανίας κ.ά.). Οι μελέτες αυτές ρίχνουν φως στην καταγωγή όχι
μόνο των βαλκανικών λαών, αλλά και της υπόλοιπης Ευρώπης. Εκτός από
τις εθνογενετικές έρευνες των σύγχρονων πληθυσμών, ασχολείται συστηματικά
και με τις παλαιοανθρωπολογικές ανασκαφές τού Σπηλαίου των Αρχανθρώπων
στα Πετράλωνα Χαλκιδικής, της ανοικτής θέσης Τρίλλιας Χαλκιδικής, καθώς
και του προϊστορικού ελέφαντα στον Περδίκκα Πτολεμαΐδας. Το 1965 προσλαμβάνεται
ως επιστημονικός συνεργάτης του υπουργείου Συντονισμού και το 1966 διατελεί
μέλος της Διοικούσας Επιτροπής του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών και Αντιπρόεδρος
της Ελληνικής Σπηλαιολογικής Εταιρείας. Λόγω της προηγούμενης ανάμειξής
του σε δημοκρατικά - αντιφασιστικά κινήματα, το ξενοκίνητο δικτατορικό
καθεστώς του 1967 τον απολύει από το Δημόσιο, τον φυλακίζει και τον
εξορίζει. Ο
διωγμός αυτός του Δρα Άρη Ν. Πουλιανού οδήγησε δημοκρατικούς ανθρωπολόγους
από διάφορες χώρες, όπως τη Γαλλία, τις Η.Π.Α., τη Γερμανία κ.α., να ζητήσουν με επιστολές την αποκατάστασή του τόσο στην κοινωνική ζωή, όσο και τις επιστημονικές δραστηριότητες. Παρόλο που οι διαμαρτυρίες αυτές οδήγησαν στην απελευθέρωσή του (αποφυλακίστηκε ύστερα από πεντέμισι μήνες), όσον αφορά την επιστημονική του καριέρα δεν υπήρξε παρομοίως αίσια κατάληξη, καθώς αποκλείστηκε έως το 1976 από κάθε κρατική θέση. Το 1968 εκλέγεται Αντιπρόεδρος του 8ου Παγκοσμίου Συνεδρίου Ανθρωπολογίας στο Τόκιο, το 1971 ιδρύει την Ανθρωπολογική Εταιρεία Ελλάδος και το 1977 την Υπηρεσία Παλαιοανθρωπολογίας - Σπηλαιολογίας του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού. Το 1979 εκλέγεται στην Τσεχία Πρόεδρος του επόμενου (3ου) Πανευρωπαϊκού Συνεδρίου Ανθρωπολογίας, το οποίο πραγματοποίησε τις εργασίες του στο Ανθρωπολογικό Μουσείο Πετραλώνων Χαλκιδικής το 1982. Από το 1983 κι εδώ δέχεται λυσσαλέες επιθέσεις από οργανωμένα αντιεπιστημονικά και ανθελληνικά κυκλώματα, που δρουν κυρίως μέσω κρατικών οργάνων. Προσφεύγει αμυνόμενος στην ελληνική Δικαιοσύνη και αποκρούει με επιτυχία τους επιτιθέμενους. Επί 10ετίες διατελεί μέλος του Μονίμου Διεθνούς Συμβουλίου Ανθρωπολογικών και Εθνολογικών Επιστημών της UNESCO και από το 1987 συμπεριλαμβάνεται ανάμεσα στα μέλη της Ακαδημίας Επιστημών της Ν. Υ. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε πάνω από 40 επιστημονικά συνέδρια ανά τον κόσμο, ανακοινώνοντας τις ανακαλύψεις και τα ανθρωπολογικά συμπεράσματά του. Στο συγγραφικό του έργο περιλαμβάνονται 5 βιβλία και πάνω από 100 επιστημονικές εργασίες, δημοσιευμένες σε δεκάδες διεθνή και ελληνικά περιοδικά. Πρόσφατα (2006) κυκλοφόρησε η βιογραφία του, γραμμένη από την ιατρό σύζυγό του Δάφνη, με τίτλο: Άρης Ν. Πουλιανός - Ανατροπές - Από τη ζωή και το έργο του. Αρθρογραφεί από το 1947 και συμμετέχει σε αντιρατσιστικές ομάδες εργασίας της ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ από το 1964 κατά κάθε φυλετικής διάκρισης.
